We offer practical advice at different levels. With explanations and recommendations while we stay our best to stay as impartial as possible. We are a small team of volunteers who are passionate about privacy and security.
The 4-Tier Standard
Every article evaluates topics on a 4-tier scale of privacy and security. The tiers are:
Tier 1: Exposed — Default settings and bad practices; if you never worried about your privacy this is likely the level you are at.
Tier 2: Basic — Very basic privacy and security; maybe some privacy settings enabled; and some tracking blocked. A good first step but mostly band-aid solutions which do not counter more sophisticated tracking and surveillance techniques.
Tier 3: Advanced — Good privacy and security practices; a solid foundation for protecting your data and online presence. Often the golilocks zone between usability and security. Most people should aim for this level.
Tier 4: Secure — Privacy and security at all cost; the highest level of protection available. This level usually requires technical knowledge and quite some effort to maintain, often introduces a lot of inconvenience.
